Classy Silk Route and Crysler justify favouritism

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, June 19: Fancied grey mare Silk Route romped home an easy winner in the supporting event of the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Wednesday.

The 70 to 100 favourite Silk Route came from behind to gain an easy success over the front-runner Little Master by three-and- a-half lengths. The bay filly Thunder Bird and the bay Royal Man completed the frame. In all, 16 ran for this fifth event of the day run over 800 metres.

The chestnut gelding Crysler lived up to his status of favourite when he clinched the feature event. Ridden by Azam Hussain, a novice among riding boys, running abreast of the field wore down Thank You Dear by three lengths. Prince Of Peace finished third after nosing out Fifty Six Fifty Six to fourth position. Eight contestants lined up for this sixth and last race of the day.

The outstanding performer of the day was chestnut colt Knock Out, who outclassed a field of classy sprinters to register victory in the fourth race. Backed at attractive odds of three to one, Knock Out outpaced Malook Star by two lengths to oblige his connections.

Raja Tehmasab Khan, who is leading Trainers’ log for the 2001-2002 season, excelled. He sent out Silk Route and Crysler in the fifth and sixth race, respectively. Tehmasab is now heading for the trainers championship with his tally of 42 winners. His nearest rival Amjad Ali II has 37 winners.

The Lahore Race Club stewards changed over half a dozen riders of the mounts who they suspected were not sent to perform on merits. But in most cases the change failed to bring desired results. All races were contested over 800 metres.
