Pierce bites dust

EASTBOURNE, June 17: The summer grass-court campaign of Mary Pierce got off to a poor start Monday as the double Grand Slam champion lost 6-4, 6-4 to Japan’s Ai Sugiyama at the Eastbourne tournament.

The other two wild card entries, Anna Kournikova and Martina Navratilova, do not begin their singles play until Tuesday.
