50-foot breach developed in Bihari Canal

SADIQABAD, June 14: A 50-foot breach in the Bihari Canal wreaked havoc on various localities in the district on Friday.

The canal is a source of irrigation in Tarindah Muhammad Pannah and adjacent areas.

It is alleged the irrigation officials had never bothered to do repair works on the canal. Weak its edges were, the canal developed breach when the irrigation staff released water over its capacity.

Basti Bhaiya, Mohana, Bashir Ahmad Darkhan and basti Balochan were inundated. Cotton crop spreading over hundreds of acres was damaged.

People have demanded that a probe should be conducted into the matter.

DIED: Three labourers died on Thursday night when they were buried while digging a tubewell near Abadpur.

Reports said Chaudhry Nazir Fazal got a tubewell installed. While digging, a heap of clay fell over the labourers.

Three of them Rais Haji, Amanullah and Akmal alias Akoo died instantly. An injured labourer was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Abadpur police are investigating.
