SAHIWAL, June 10: The local police on Monday busted an inter-district car-lifter gang and arrested its ring leader and his four accomplices.

SSP Ahmed Latif told newsmen the gang had been involved in over 22 cases of which 11 were committed in Sahiwal, two in Karachi and others in districts including Sheikhupura, Kasur and Multan.

He said the anti-dacoity cell headed by DSP Rai Zamirul Haq arrested the criminals and recovered nine Toyota cars, one Mazda pick-up, Rs120,000 in cash, two wristwatches worth Rs150,000, cheque books, three pistols, a mouser and 30 cartridges from their possession.

The recovered cars were handed over to their owners.

RECOVERED: On the orders of a local court, a bailiff on Monday recovered three persons from the unlawful custody of Harappa police station.

Tahir Hussain, the brother of detainees, said in the petition that his brother Safdar Hussain had an election rivalry with councillor Abdul Razzaq. To take revenge, the councillor with the connivance of Harappa police SI Malik Raees trespassed his house and arrested his brothers Iqbal Hussain, Malik Ejaz and Safdar. The police detained them unlawfully in the lock-up. The complainant also alleged that Ejaz was also subjected to torture.

The judge directed the Harappa SI to appear before court on June 15.

MAN, SISTER DIE: An oil stove burst on Monday claimed the lives of a man and his sister in Thatha Nooran Sial village.

Surraya was cooking food on the oil stove when it suddenly burst. She and her brother Afzal sustained serious burn wounds. They were taken to a local hospital where they died.
