MULTAN, June 9: Local chapter of the Pakistan People’s Party has condemned the conviction of former National Assembly speaker Yousaf Raza Gilani by an accountability court.
In a press statement here on Sunday, PPP’s Multan district president Habibullah Shakir and federal council member Haider Abbas Gardezi termed the accountability court decision victimization.
They said the charges that led to the conviction of Mr. Gilani had also been instituted against former speakers Gohar Ayub and Illahi Bakhsh Soomro and former senate chairman Waseem Sajjad, but they were moving scot-free because they were the apple of the government’s eye.
They said Mr. Gilani had won acclaims from the people of south Punjab for not succumbing to the state power and remained loyal to his party and ideology.
THAR CANAL: A member of the central coordination committee of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Iftikhar Akbar Randhawa, has termed the Greater Thal Canal project an anti-Pakistan initiative.
In a press statement here on Sunday, he said all those who were supporting the project were, in fact, safeguarding the interests of the establishment.
He said the residents of Thal were feeling insecurity and apprehensions about the project but the government was committed to spend a big amount of Rs30 billion on this project.
He said, therefore, he saw a conspiracy behind the project to divide people and make money through commissions in the construction work.
