KARACHI, June 4: A drug smuggler was sentenced on Tuesday to 14 years in jail by the special anti-narcotics court (ANC).
Judge Ali Nawaz Pirzada also imposed a fine of Rs200,000 on Muhammed Faraz, a Bengali-speaking man caught with five kilograms heroin by the customs officials.
The drug smuggler, who had reached the Quaid-i-Azam International Airport on August 8, 2000 to board a Dhaka-bound flight, would have to undergo an additional one-year term of simple imprisonment in case of default on the payment of fine.
The accused was convicted by the judge after he confessed to his crime pleading guilty. Two co-accused, however, preferred to be tried.
According to prosecution, the two co-accused — Ikram and Shah Alam — were arrested and charged in the case following a lead given by accused Muhammed Faraz, who disclosed that the contraband drug was supplied by the two.
ACQUITTED: The district and sessions judge, West, Ms Qaiser Iqbal, acquitted a man, charged for attempt to murder.
Accused Raza Khan had injured Zahir Shah on March 19 this year on a petty issue within the limits of Jackson police.
The judge ordered his acquittal after the two partied compromised with each other.
Meanwhile, the additional district and sessions judge, Ms Naseem Mansoor, acquitted a man in a murder case for want of incriminating evidence.
Syed Bilal was prosecuted for killing Iftikhar in 1993 in Saeedabad.
