HENGELO (Netherlands), June 3: Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie had to abandon a tilt at the world one-hour record at an international meeting Sunday because of a calf injury.
Gebrselassie was leading the race and on course to break the record of 21.1 kms set by Mexican Arturo Barrios in 1991 when he was forced to give up with 20 minutes to go.
Kenyan Reuben Kosgei had planned to attack the world record for the 3,000 metres steeplechase, but his time of eight minutes 05.87 seconds was well outside the 7:55.28 set by Moroccan Brahim Boulami in Brussels last August.
