LAHORE, June 3: The second phase of the national hockey training camp started Monday with three key players — Mohammad Sarwar, Waseem Ahmad and Sohail Abbas — missing.

Thirty-one probables were called for the training camp of which 28 reported here at National Hockey Stadium (NHS). The camp has been set up for the July’s tour to Spain and Manchester Commonwealth Games.

The manager, Lt-Col Zafar Ali Khan (retd), said Sohail and Waseem were still in Malaysia and Germany playing league. Kashif Jawwad, who had missed the first phase of the camp, had returned and reported for the second leg of the camp.

He said that he had no intimation when Sohail, Waseem and Sarwar were expected to join.

Meanwhile, the two goalkeepers Mohammad Qasim and Salman Akbar have recovered from their injuries but are advised a two-day rest by the manager.

The manager said camp was likely to be shifted at the outer ground of the NHS where the sessions would be held at night under the lights. The work to install the lights was in progress. It was decided to hold sessions under the lights to avoid training under the blazing sun which had caused injuries to several players, he said.

Trials to select the 18-member team will be held on June 15.
