PORT-OF-SPAIN (Trinidad), June 3: Sachin Tendulkar cracked his 56th one-day half-century and captured the key wicket of Brian Lara as India beat West Indies by 56 runs to clinch the series 2-1 Sunday.
The 29-year-old, who holds the world record for runs and centuries in one-dayers, struck only three fours and a six in an uncharacteristic 70-ball 65 that saw him rely more on good running between the wickets rather than big, lusty blows.
Skipper Saurav Ganguly added 56 as India amassed 260 in their 50 overs despite a five-wicket haul by paceman Mervyn Dillon. But a 20-minute rain interruption made things more difficult for the West Indies with the target reduced to 248 off 44 overs.
The home side had already been docked an over because of a slow bowling rate during the Indian innings.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul raised visions of a fightback with an attacking 39-ball 51 after Lara had looked good for 36, but West Indies could not recover enough from 88 for five and were finally bowled for 191 in 36.2 overs.
Gayle, who scored a match-winning 84 on Saturday, lost his off-stump to a yorker from speedster Zaheer Khan, who had first-spell figures of 5-1-12-1.
Lara and Sarwan looked to steady the innings against a consistently climbing asking rate, but they led charmed lives.
Lara was on four when he edged Nehra to second slip, where Sehwag dropped a sharp catch diving forward. Sarwan got a life on 15 when he flicked off-spinner Harbhajan Singh to mid-wicket, where Yuvraj Singh dropped a sitter.
The Guyanese was finally bowled by Harbhajan while attempting to play a late cut off the back foot before Tendulkar had Lara caught at deep mid-wicket with a full-toss.
Chanderpaul drove occasional spinner Sehwag through the off side for three fours and lofted Harbhajan over long on for a six but the off-spinner had him caught at mid-wicket.
Wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs struck a quickfire 31-ball 36, but his dismissal in the 36th over finally sealed the match for India.
