FAISALABAD, June 3: Protest demonstrations, rallies and hunger strike camps will be set up in all big cities if former senator Asif Ali Zardari was not released in June.

This decision was taken at a meeting of the Zardari Release Movement held here on Monday which was presided over by Nayyar Hasan Dar.

The meeting decided that a rally would be taken out here in the first week of July to pressurize the government to release Mr Zardari.

The participants of the meeting urged the government to invite former premier Benazir Bhutto to hold discussions over national issues.

They claimed that military rulers had absolutely failed to resolve people’s problems. The prices of all consumer goods have gone beyond the reach of poor people.

DRUG-TRAFFICKERS: At least 344 cases have been registered against drug-traffickers during the last 10 months.

This was stated by Excise and Taxation Officer Farman Masud during a meeting with district Nazim Chaudhry Zahid Nazir in the chair here on Monday.

The meeting was also told that narcotics, including 1.166 kg heroin in 73 cases, 39.136 kg charas in 181 cases, 1.129 kg opium in 30 cases and 24.710 kg poppy in nine cases had been recovered during the corresponding period.

Expressing his views, Chaudhry Zahid Nazir said that all resources would be utilized to purge society from the drug menace.

He directed the departments concerned to look up their performance as negligence would not be tolerated.

Mr Nazir also directed district officer (Health) and drug inspectors to take stern action against medical stores involved in selling intoxicating drugs.

Bishop Joseph Kouts informed the meeting that various programmes, including seminars, walks and speech contests, had been in progress for creating awareness among the general public against the narcotics.

Superintendents of central and district jails Nasir Mehmud Warraich, Shahid Saleem, DO (Colleges) Dr Qasim, ASP Muhammad Idrees and AETO Iftikhar Dogar also attended the meeting.

CAMPAIGN: A special campaign is being started by the Nadra for issuing computerized ID cards to applicants between 18 to 21 years of age.

This was stated by Nadra district registrar Qamaruz Zaman here on Monday.

PROTEST: Around two dozen low-paid employees of the irrigation department on Monday blocked the Mamukanjan-Faisalabad Road in protest against what they called indifferent attitude of the area sub-engineer.

Baildars, clerks and other low-paid employees deputed at Mamukanjan staged a demonstration in front of the area offices to register their protest against sub-engineer allegedly demanding “bribe” from them on various pretexts.

They burnt used tyres and erected barricades and blocked the traffic. They chanted slogans against sub-engineer and demanded his immediate transfer.

They alleged that sub-engineer Mamukanjan was involved in water theft cases.
