KARACHI, May 30: A Nigerian national, Michael Emeka Nwala, arrested on charge of drug smuggling, committed suicide in the Custom House lockup on Thursday morning.

A press release of Collectorate of Customs (Preventive) said Mr Nwala committed suicide inside the cell on the lockup premises, where he was confined.

The Customs guard officer lodged a report at the TPX police station for the initiation of legal proceedings.

Michael Nwala was arrested on May 28 by the Customs’ Drug Enforcement Cell staff at the airport on the charge of smuggling three kilograms of heroin before boarding a Gulf Air flight for Lagos.

A case of drug smuggling was instituted against him in the Court of Control of Narcotics Substances.

He was produced before the judicial magistrate, who gran-ted his physical remand till June 3 for further investigations. —PPI
