KARACHI: Gang-rape victims’ family seek security

KARACHI, May 30: The family members of the two gang-rape victims in Ramsawami area have urged the government to provide them security and make arrangements for their rehabilitation.

Addressing a press conference at Lawyers of Human Rights and Legal Aid (LHRLA) office, the father and brother of gang-rape victim girls, expressed concern over attitude of some senior government officials who visited their house, promised for security, rehabilitation as well as litigation, but nothing concrete have been made in this regards, so far.

Condemning heinous gang-rape, LHRLA president Zia Ahmed Awan lamented the apathy of the government and civil society organisations to redress the grievances of the aggrieved family.

He opined that torture under detention is rampant in Pakistan and every one knows the brutalities perpetrated by the police personnel.

He said that as some police personnel and their relatives are involved in the gang-rape of these two girls, therefore, it had become a test case for the police department.

The father of victims informed the newsmen that he has been receiving threats of dire consequences from the criminals since registration of the case.

He also informed that some people who might be accomplices of criminals are continuously monitoring their movement, which clearly indicates that they could cause loss to his family.

Some five people identified as Malik Safeer, former Constable, Azmatullah, Lamik Qamar Iqbal, constable of Investigation department, Malik Hasnat son of a police inspector and Kashif came to the house of Abdul Sattar on the night of April 1, at 2.30 pm, knocked the door and said that a complaint has been lodged against family members of victims.

When Abdul Sattar opened the door, the accused held the inmates hostage at gunpoint, tied up and tortured the house owner and his son and gang-raped his two daughters in front of their eyes.—PPI
