Heavy rains kill 15 in Punjab

BAHAWALPUR, May 29: Fifteen people were killed in Tuesday night’s rain in different cities of the Punjab.

Seven people were reported killed in roof collapse in different areas of Hasilpur tehsil.

Two granddaughters of Fatehpur Dadpotra on Darbar Road, Hasilpur, Gul Muhammad in Luddan, Haji Sadiq and his wife in Chak 63-Fateh and two people in Mauza Bonga in Hasilpur were killed when roofs of their houses collapsed.

Meanwhile, Bahawalpur and its suburban areas received heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds which uprooted many trees and electricity and telephone poles.

BAHAWALNAGAR: Windstorm and rain left four people dead, including two children, in Fortabbas tehsil.

The storm removed roofs of many houses and uprooted trees which disrupted power supply and telecommunication links.

JHANG: A six-year-old boy was killed and his mother and sister sustained critical injuries as the roof of their room caved in.

Liaquat Ali, a labourer of Chak 214, was taking meal along with his family (wife, three daughters and a son) when the incident occurred. His son Danish died while wife Jundan and 10-year-old daughter Razia sustained serious injuries. The other three family members escaped with minor injuries.

Meanwhile, Jhang city and its suburbs were lashed by a windstorm, with winds blowing at a speed of 80 kms to 90 kms per hour, accompanied by heavy rain. The storm uprooted many trees which damaged electricity and telephone poles. The city remained without electricity all night.

SHEIKHUPURA: Two labourers were killed after struck by lightning while several others sustained injuries in Chak 578 late on Tuesday.

They were riding a tractor-trolley loaded with wheat when lightning struck. Hafiz and Yaqoob Masih died on the spot while several others sustained burn injuries. Some of the injured were identified as Nadim Masih, Ashiq Masih, Riaz Sajid, Lawrence Masih and Liaquat. They were removed to a nearby hospital.

FAISALABAD: A woman died in a roof collapse incident in Tandlianwala.

Sardaran, 52, was sitting in a room in her house when the incident took place. She was pulled out of debris by her family members. She died on way to hospital.

Meanwhile, trees, billboards, electricity and telephone poles were uprooted in the windstorm. The power supply to the city remained suspended for about five hours.

SARGODHA: Various areas of city, including Rehmanpura, Zafar Colony, Millatabad, Islampura and Satellite Town, were inundated after heavy downpour on Tuesday night.

Stagnant water could not be pumped out as Fesco had disconnected power supply to various disposal stations of Sargodha tehsil administration due to default in payment of bills.
