Varsities asked to uphold quality: Convocation at GIK

SWABI May 29: The NWFP Governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, has said that universities must excel in imparting modern scientific education to the youth so as to find solutions to problems in various fields. However, he warned, quality must not be comprised on quantity under any circumstances.

He was speaking at the sixth convocation of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology at Topi here on Wednesday.

The governor conferred degrees on 135 students of five different faculties of the institute. The gold medal for best academic performance among all the facilities was awarded to Muneer Usman and the Quaid-i-Azam gold medal for overall best performance and co-curricular activities was awarded to Amir Waqas.

For the best academic performance the gold medal was awarded to Mohammad Atif Awan of faculty of computer science and engineering, Muneer Usman of faculty of electronic engineering, Zakaria Hadi of faculty of engineering sciences, Adeel Qamar of faculty of mechanical engineering and Adeel Raza of faculty of metallurgy and materials engineering.

The governor said the universities should keep in mind that what kind of modern education be needed in the present rapidly changing scientific and technological world and how

“we can come over the confronting difficulties, specially in the field of science and technology”.

He  appreciated  the GIK  Institute  for introducing  the MS, Ph.D and a new course

in  software engineering which would meet the requirements in the field of computer science.

The pro-rector of the institute, Illahi Bukhsh Soomro, said: “The  institute encourages collaboration  with  international universities in the domain of research. We have  recently installed a high temperature furnace (2200 degree Centigrade) in the faculty of metallurgy and material engineering in the collaboration with the University of Limoges, France.

The furnace, he said, the first of its kind in any educational and research institution in Pakistan, would enable our researchers to undertake advance research.

The convocation was also attended by president of the governing body of the institute and former president of Pakistan Ghulam Ishaq Khan, GIKEST board of governors and executive committee, ambassadors of several countries and a large number parents of the graduating students.
