KARACHI, May 29: The assistant sessions judge, West, Zahida Sikander, acquitted a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a case pertaining to attempt to kill policemen during an attack on a police station.

The judge exonerated Yaqoob Dada from the charges of attacking the Baldia Town police station in 1992 as the prosecution could not establish its case against him.

The Baldia police had registered the case against 35 people, including Farooq Dada, who was later killed in an ”encounter” with the police.

Meanwhile, the additional district and sessions judge, Central, Ahmed Nawaz Shaikh, acquitted a worker of the Muttahida in a “police encounter” case.

Farasat Mirza was prosecuted for committing a shootout with a police party in his attempt to kill the law enforcers on Nov 3, 1995 in the limits of the Gulbahar police.

He was acquitted for want of incriminating evidence.

The same court also acquitted two Muttahida activists in three different murder cases, registered in 1995.

Besides, the judicial magistrate, West, S. M. Naqi, acquitted two men, prosecuted for possessing unlicensed pistols.

Arshad and Sohail were booked in 1999 under section 13-D and 13-E of the Arms Ordinance by the Orangi police.

BAIL CANCELLED: The additional district and sessions judge, Salim Jan Khan, cancelled the bail of Shoaib Khan in a kidnapping for ransom case as he did not appear before the court despite several notices.

The judge, who is holding the trial inside the jail, also issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of the accused and ordered the police to produce him before the court on June 25.

The home department had notified the trial of Shoaib Khan inside the jail following an attack on the under-trial businessman, who was also injured.

Four policemen were shot dead and seven others, including Shoaib Khan, were wounded in the ambush at Malir.

Shoaib Khan, allegedly involved in the kidnapping of his rival businessman, Haji Ibrahim, was being taken back to the Landhi jail from an anti-terrorism court, when the prisoner’s van came under attack near Malook Hotel, near the Malir bridge.

The businessman, who suffered three bullet wounds, is facing trial in four cases.

Judge Alim Jan Khan also ordered the forfeiture of the surety bond, deposited for the bail of the businessman.

Meanwhile, the judicial magistrate, Azmat Lodhi, also issued NBWs against Shoaib Khan in a case pertaining to the possession of unlicensed arms.

BLAST CASE: An anti-terrorism court put off the hearing of a bomb blast case against two workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement till Thursday after recording the statements of four more prosecution witnesses.

Yaqoob and Asif are being tried in the ATC-2 for planting a bomb in a sugar crushing machine, which had exploded around 6:45pm on January 17, 2000 near the Pakistan Chowk, in the limits of Arambagh police.

SPP MEN: Judge Abdul Ghafoor Memon of ATC-2 adjourned the hearing of a double murder case against four workers of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan till June 1 as the jail authorities did not produced the accused persons.

The case against Dilawar Hussain alias Dildar, Shahzad Maqsood, Abdul Wasim and Muhammed Saeed Awan alias Saeed Kalia pertained to the murder of a moazzin and chowkidar of Askari Imambargah on Feb 9 last year in Jauharabad.

The jail authorities had earlier informed the court that the UTPs were not produced before the court as the provincial government had notified the trial of sectarian murder cases inside the jail premises.

The judge, however, ordered the jail authorities to produce the accused persons before the court on the next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, represented by Mazhar Qayyum, the four accused persons with an absconding accused, Asif Ramzi, shot dead moazzin Imtiaz Hussan in an attack.
