Three Afghans arrested

By Our Correspondent

WANA, May 28: Three Afghans belonging to the Northern Alliance were arrested at the scouts checkpoint in the Angoor Adda area near the Pakistan-Afghan border in the South Waziristan Agency on Tuesday.

They were shifted to the Scouts Camp in Wana for interrogation. Informed sources said that the authorities had also recovered a wireless set and a Kalashnikov rifle from the three Afghans, who possessed no valid travel documents.

Dawn has learnt on good authority that these people had come to Pakistan territory to persuade the local tribesmen of Mahsud and Wazir tribes to join the Afghan army and that they were arrested on their return to Afghanistan.

The monthly salary of new recruits in the Afghan army ranges between $200 and $250, which is considered an attractive offer by the unemployed tribesmen.

DONATION: A top US military official has donated $2000 for the repair and furnishing of a mosque and purchase of loudspeakers for it in the Landai Doag area of Birmal in the south eastern Afghanistan, bordering the Waziristan Agency.
