MIRPURKHAS, May 28: Following increasing incidents of excesses towards bonded labourers, the Sindh Government has decided to constitute monitoring committees at the district level.

In this regard, all the DCOs have been directed to set up monitoring committees.

District Nazim will be chairman of the committee and its vice chairman will be the district and sessions judge.

The EDO, revenue, president District Bar Association, DCO, district officer community, owners of brick kilns, landlords, two representatives of labour, representatives of the social welfare department, two representatives of coal labour, a representative of journalists, and a representative of NGOs working for human rights will be taken in as members.

INEFFICIENCY: Syed Ali Gohar Shah, chairman, Farmers Organization Council, said that due to inefficiency of the irrigation department, Mirpurkhas, the Nara canal command area rotation programme had become completely redundant.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, he said that he had convened an urgent meeting of the Farmers Organization Council on May 30 at its office in Mirpurkhas to look into the matter.

Mr Shah warned that if water was not provided to the distributaries by 5pm on May 29, then on May 30 massive protest demonstrations would be held.

WATER SHORTAGE: The discriminatory water supply has led to the closure of distributaries since a month in Mithrao division while standing crops have been destroyed in the command area.

This was stated by the growers of Mithrao division while talking to newsmen at the press club on Tuesday.

They alleged that irrigation officials were supplying very little water to Mithrao in comparison to the other canals.

LIFE SENTENCE TO FOUR: The district and sessions judge, Mirpurkhas, Pir Ali Shah on Tuesday awarded life sentence to four accused — M. Alam Lund, Bhangar Khan, M. Malook, and Lal Bux — in the murder case of one Mir M. Solangi and also fined them Rs50,000 each.

The convicts would undergo an additional six-month imprisonment if they failed to pay the fine.

SUMMONED: The second judicial magistrate and the FCM, Mirpurkhas, Anwar Ahmed Memon summoned M. Sadiq Arain, SP Investigation, Dadu Police, along with all official records in his court on May 30.

TWO AWARDED LIFE SENTENCE: The district and sessions judge, Mirpurkhas, Pir Ali Shah awarded life sentence to two brothers — Vishnu Kolhi and Ganga Ram — in a murder case on Tuesday.
