Athletes named for C’wealth Games

By Our Sports Reporter

ISLAMABAD, May 27: The Pakistan Amateur Athletic Federation (PAAF) Monday named its squad for the July 25-Aug 4 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

The team comprises sprinter Ali Yasir Rai and shot putter Rana Ghufran while Shabana Khattak (100m hurdles) and Zeenat Parveen (shot put) make the women’s team.

The PAAF selectors also named Ehteshamul Haq (discus throw) and Allah Ditta (400m hurdles) as stand-bys.

Although the Pakistan Sports Board has fixed a quota of one male and one female athlete for the Games, the selection committee decided to request them and the Pakistan Olympic Association for financial assistance to fund the trip of the additional athletes.

Meanwhile 20 male athletes and 10 females were picked for the national camps which will run simultaneously at Islamabad and Lahore in preparation for this year’s Asian Games and the Asian Championships.

The athletes were selected following trials held last Friday in Islamabad.

Aman Khan, Abdul Majeed, Nasrullah and a nominee of Railways will impart training to the athletes in Islamabad while Ch. Muhammad Siddique, M. Arshad Ramzan and Ms. Seemi Rizvi will be responsible for coaching at the Lahore camp.

It was also announced that Pakistan will take part in the IAAF World Junior Athletics Championships in Jamaica in July.
