LAHORE, May 27: Five-year-old bay Shah The Great proved his worth winning the feature event of the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Sunday.

Shah The Great, who won the Derby Trials race in February 2001, but lost the Pakistan Derby held in March, gave a glimpse of his old form when he left race-goers mesmerised with his leaping strides to beat Better Case easily by a big margin of five lengths.

Admiral’s Way finished third two-and-a-half lengths back while Half Love completed the board another one-and-a-quarter length further behind. In all, ten ran for the event. Shah The Great clocked 55 3/5 seconds over 900 metres distance.

The supporting event, the Sind Plate, a class VII division 11 run over 900 metres was bagged by long shot blue-roan colt Afnan. Piloted by riding boy A. Aziz the colt beat the grey colt Al Zarrar by three lengths.

The gelding Shannel finished third two lengths further behind with Star Gate fourth, another five lengths back. Only nine ran for the event.

Jockey M. Hanif, gave a fine display of horsemanship partnering Best In Show to defeat short-odds favourite Thunder Storm by a length in the opener. Jockey Aamar Parvez and riding boy A. Aziz alongwith trainer Razzak, stole the limelight of the day’s racing by registering a double each.

Parvez partnered Devi Husn Ki and Shah The Great in the second and fifth race respectively, while Aziz recorded his double through long shots Lucky Credit Queen and Afnan in the third and fourth race respectively.

Trainer Razzak sent out the fancied Devi Husn Ki and odds-on favourite Shah The Great, the only favourites to oblige in a card reduced to five events.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards had earlier declared the Sind Plate Class VII Division VI race void due to paucity of runners. All races were contested over the sprinting distance of 900 metres.
