Inspired Furyk ends win drought

DUBLIN (Ohio), May 27: Jim Furyk ended a 17-month win drought when he shot a final-round 65 to win the Memorial Tournament on Sunday.

Furyk, whose last win was at the 2000 Mercedes Championships, posted a 14-under-par 274 to win the $810,000 first prize.

David Peoples (68) and John Cook (69) both finished at 12 under for the tournament to share second place.

Reigning British Open champion David Duval returned to some sort of form with a final-round 66 to record his first top-10 finish of the year, tying for fourth at 11-under-par with Harrison Frazar (67), Vijay Singh (69) and Shigeki Maruyama (70).

At one point late in the final round, five players held a share of the lead at 11-under-par.

But Furyk broke from the pack with a birdie-eagle-birdie stretch on holes 12 through 14.

Defending champion Tiger Woods finished with a six-under-par 66 for 282 and tied for 22nd.

HANSEN WINS

WENTWORTH (England): Danish outsider Anders Hansen won the PGA Championship here Sunday by five shots for his first tour title.

Hansen, 31, finished on a tournament record 269 — 19 under par — as he maintained the five shot lead he established at the end of the third round.

Hansen moved to the head of the leaderboard with scores of 65 and 66 in the second and third rounds respectively.

That left him in a commanding position and meant he could afford to drop a few shots in the final round.

But he finished in fine style with a closing two-under par 70 and a winner’s cheque for 333,330 pounds (489,995 dollars) - more than five times the previous biggest of his career.

Victory meant Hansen received a five-year tour exemption and a place in the British Open at Muirfield, Scotland, in July.

It also lifted him to 49th in the world rankings.

But Hansen will have to wait until the end of the Memorial tournament in Ohio to see if he has automatically qualified for the US Open where the world’s top 50 are guaranteed entry.

Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie and Argentina’s Eduardo Romero were joint second on 14 under par.

Final round scores:

269 Anders Hansen (Denmark) 68 65 66 70

274 Colin Montgomerie 64 71 72 67, Eduardo Romero (Argentina) 67 68 71 68

276 Michael Campbell (New Zealand) 68 70 71 67, Nick Faldo 71 68 68 69, Carlos Rodiles (Spain) 69 67 68 72

277 Jarrod Moseley (Australia) 71 73 70 63, Darren Clarke 70 71 69 67

279 David Gilford 68 71 70 70, Peter O’Malley (Australia) 69 71 69 70

280 Niclas Fasth (Sweden) 71 71 71 67, Stephen Leaney (Australia) 68 71 73 68, Peter Baker 70 70 68 72, Maarten Lafeber (Netherlands) 71 70 67 72
