Inspired Furyk ends win drought
WENTWORTH (England): Danish outsider Anders Hansen won the PGA Championship here Sunday by five shots for his first tour title. Hansen, 31, finished on a tournament record 269 — 19 under par — as he maintained the five shot lead he established at the end of the third round. Hansen moved to the head of the leaderboard with scores of 65 and 66 in the second and third rounds respectively. That left him in a commanding position and meant he could afford to drop a few shots in the final round. But he finished in fine style with a closing two-under par 70 and a winner’s cheque for 333,330 pounds (489,995 dollars) - more than five times the previous biggest of his career. Victory meant Hansen received a five-year tour exemption and a place in the British Open at Muirfield, Scotland, in July. It also lifted him to 49th in the world rankings. But Hansen will have to wait until the end of the Memorial tournament in Ohio to see if he has automatically qualified for the US Open where the world’s top 50 are guaranteed entry. Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie and Argentina’s Eduardo Romero were joint second on 14 under par.
