Rain ends play

PARIS, March 27: Rain has caused scheduled first round matches at the French Open to be called off after play was halted three times on Monday.

Play was halted for a third time at 1745 GMT as rain fell over the Roland Garros stadium.

Twelfth seed Pete Sampras — seeking the only grand slam tournament to elude him — was trailing Italy’s Andrea Gaudenzi by two sets to one when heavy showers disrupted play.

Rain had earlier halted play for 90 and 45 minutes on the first day of the grand slam tournament in the French capital.

Among the seeds to have their matches put back to Tuesday were Belgium’s fourth seed Kim Clijsters, losing finalist to Jennifer Capriati last year, and American three times champion Monica Seles. —Reuters
