RAWALPINDI, May 25: The district government will take action against transporters operating illegally in the city areas, an official spokesman said on Saturday.

The operation will be started from Peshawar Road and then extended to Adiala Road, Rawat and other areas.

The vehicles being plied illegally, he said, would be impounded and heavy fines be imposed on the owners. Special instructions in this regard have been issued to the traffic police and transport department, he said.

He said the district government was fully committed to providing best transport facilities to the citizens. “At the same time, it will be ensured that no injustice is done to the transporters who operate legally after paying taxes,” he said.

Meanwhile, the union leaders of transporters told Dawn that public transport owners were ready to ply vehicles on all routes if the only private transport company in the city continued to stop its bus service.

They said they had met the Regional Transport Authority’s secretary and informed him that they had all kinds of vehicles available with them to replace the buses of the private transport company.
