PESHAWAR, May 23: A student of the University of Engineering and Technology here attempted to commit suicide in protest against not being allowed to take examination, sources disclosed on Wednesday.

They told Dawn that Junaid, son of Col Shams, resident of Defence Colony, was brought to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) on Monday with bullet wounds in his chest.

The sources said Junaid, a civil engineering student, was barred from taking the examination because he had failed to fulfil the attendance requirement. He presented his medical certificate but the vice-chancellor refused to accept it.

The family, according to the sources, forced the police not to register the FIR.

The student’s family in Neuro Surgery block of the LRH refused to talk on the issue.

The doctors said he had shot himself in the chest but his heart was not damaged. “Junaid’s condition is out of danger and he is improving,” a doctor added.

An investigation Moharir of University Town police station denied occurrence of the incident in his jurisdiction.
