Baby Face starts off as day’s best

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, May 18: Baby Face, a four-year-old bay filly from Sinjaab out of Air Hostess, starts off as our day’s best, when the Summer Gymkhana Meeting gets under way at the Karachi Racecourse Sunday.

The filly ridden to victory by jockey Ahmed two weeks ago, is contesting in the concluding event with only seven runners in contention over the five furlong sprint.

Baby Face should be closely followed home the chestnut mare Queen Of Hearts, although she has been penalised to carry 9-5 on her back.

Only six events have been chalked out on the afternoon’s programme, all going over five furlongs. The first race begins at 2.00 p.m.

In the opener with 14 runners vying for the top honours, Powerful Tarzan, looks a good thing to overcome the challenge of Royal Springs and Winning Streak.

The 13-year-old bay gelding Law Of Nature, ridden to a narrow success by riding boy Asif Nazir, should make it two wins in a row for owner-trainer Mahboob. Prism Of Life owned by Mrs. Zain Younus should continue with his form and battle it out for the second berth with the chestnut Much Better.

The speedy 11-year-old bay Zabyan, is fancied in these columns to pick up the spoils in the third race of the afternoon from Wandering Eyes and Black Magic, in a big field of 18 runners.

Yaqoob Butt’s three-year-old bay colt Wonder Thunder has let down his supporters on several occasions in the past. But with a good young jockey astride Sunday, Wonder Thunder should deliver the goods at last in the following event, chased all the way by the game Great Bakht and Small Wonder.

The three-year-old bay colt Donatello, finishing second behind Fly To The Sky two weeks ago, should make amends and land the fifth race for joint owners Yaha and Faraz Shahid, with Knight Fighter and Satellite Star battling in out for the second spot.

An interesting afternoon of horseracing seems to be on the cards.
