KARACHI, May 17: After a day-long work the experts cleaned the brownish spot that had appeared on the dome of the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, on Friday.
Executive engineer of the Quaid-i-Azam’s mazar, Mohammad Arif, told Dawn that the spot had appeared due to environmental pollution, vehicular smoke and particulate matter.
He said that due to the increased dust in the air during the past couple of weeks the spot that had appeared on the south-east side became more evident and could be spotted from a distance and looked bad against the pure white background.
He said that during the year 2000 a comprehensive protective treatment of the mazar’s marble was carried out at the cost of over Rs3.5 million. A 100-micron tick protective layer of polysulphide was also laid on the dome.
He said the surface of the protective layer was uneven at the place where the spot appeared as dust and pollution started to deposit on the uneven surface and gradually became obvious.
He said that the contractor who had carried out the protective work in the year 2000 had given a guarantee of three years, so he had provided the service this time without any charges.
Mr Airf said that an elevator was also being installed at the mazar so that handicapped people who could not climb the stairs could also come on the podium and visit the inner chamber of the mausoleum to offer Fateha and pay their respects to the Father of the Nation. The lift, hopefully, would become operational by the end of the year, he added.
