Boutter topples Roddick


HAMBURG, May 16: Top seed Lleyton Hewitt joined Gustavo Kuerten in the quarterfinals of the Hamburg Masters on Thursday after beating Jiri Novak 6-4 6-3 in a bad-tempered Centre Court clash.

But 13th-seeded American Andy Roddick’s campaign ground to a halt when he was stopped by France’s Julien Boutter 6-3 7-5.

Marat Safin fared well, doing just enough to edge past Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6 7-5 while Roger Federer beat Tim Henman’s conqueror Adrian Voinea 7-5 6-4.

ROME: Kim Clijsters earned a place in the Italian Open quarter-finals the hard way after she was pushed to three sets by Russia’s Tatiana Panova.

The number three seed eventually won 6-3 6-7 6-1 despite being frustrated in the second set tiebreak.

The Belgian was two points away from winning the match in straight sets when a suspect line call went against her at 5-5 in the tiebreak.
