Cabrera upstages Ryder Cup stars

SUTTON COLDFIELD (England), May 13: Argentina’s Angel Cabrera upstaged Europe’s Ryder Cup contingent at The Belfry when he won the Benson and Hedges International Sunday by one stroke.

Cabrera’s closing three-under-par 69 for a total 10-under-par 278 at the September Ryder Cup venue earned him a narrow success over third round leader Barry Lane of Britain.

Two of Europe’s Ryder Cup men, Colin Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington, had to settle for a share of third place, a further stroke back, with New Zealand’s Michael Campbell.

Montgomerie and Harrington closed with 69s but Lane shot a 73.

Cabrera came from three strokes behind at the start of the final round to go one better than last year when he finished joint runner-up.

A claustrophobic day on the leaderboard saw Cabrera sharing the lead late on with Montgomerie, Harrington and Lane. But they all made late mistakes to throw their chances away and let in the Argentine.

The winner’s birdie at 17, coupled with bogeys by Lane on 16 and by Montgomerie and Harrington on 18, proved crucial.
