‘Undeserving people getting Zakat’

By Our Correspondent

TOBA TEK SINGH, May 13: Undeserving people were being given financial assistance from Zakat and ushr department’s fund for permanent rehabilitation of jobless people.

This was alleged in an adjournment motion tabled on the second day of the district council session on Monday.

Mover Javed Akram said Zakat committees comprised incompetent people who were using funds on the rehabilitation of their favourites.

Taking part in the discussion some members supported the motion and demanded that the Zakat department chairman should be asked to present lists of all those people who received benefits in the house.

Naib Nazim Haji Ghulam Rabbani directed the Zakat and ushr committee chairman to send the list to him within 15 days which would be delivered among the members before next meeting.

The house also decided that no payment would be made to the contractors of various development schemes without the approval of union council concerned Nazim about the quality of work.

Issue of irregularities of food department and PASSCO regarding wheat purchase was also raised by some members and they complained that the gunny bags were being delivered to the commission agents instead of the farmers.

Nazim Chaudhry Ashfaq assured the house that cases would be registered against the food department and PASSCO officials if they refused to purchase wheat from farmers or give them gunny bags.

He said during his visit to six purchase centres along with officials concerned on Sunday, he found irregularities and he would send his report to the food secretary.

He asked the union council Nazimeen to regularly visit procurement centres and to report him immediately if they find any corruption at the centres.

He directed PASSCO officials not to recover unloading fee from the growers.

On Sardar Waheed Anwar motion, the house decided to write to the food department deputy director to immediately make payment of market fee to the market committee concerned against the purchase of wheat.
