Competitive card for Lahore races

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, May 11: A competitive card of six events, will be decided during the Lahore Gymkhana races to be held at Racecourse Sunday.

The Jaranwala Plate, a class IV & V combined handicap race, features the main card to be run over the sprinting distance of five furlongs with seven contestants in the field.

By virtue of his low placing in the handicap at seven stones 13 pounds, chestnut Better Case has an edge over his six rivals.

Better Case has already won back-to-back races over a mile and six furlongs on April 21 and April 28, respectively, to make his claim look sound.

He will be going all out to make it three in-a-row. Half Love and filly Gambling Girl can give Better Case a tough fight although they have been tightly handicapped.

Kamoke Plate, class VII division I & II combined, has a respectable field of a dozen acceptors.

Of them lowly placed Chestnut colt Red Ransom, Martial Law, Blu’s Wendy and Star Gate are on chance and in form contestants.

Red Ransom, a progeny of Dexter out-of-Raba Riba has won two races consecutively on April 21 and May 5. Both his victories were easy and he will be going to complete a hat trick Sunday.

Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have taken steps to improve the standard of racing which has been deteriorating particularly in Gymkhana events.

In a notification issued Saturday they have directed owners to send on try out all chance animals. Owners have been instructed to abide by the rules and regulations and any violation will result in fines and punitive measures.
