Six hurt in Srinagar protests

SRINAGAR, May 9: Six people were injured here on Thursday when Indian police fired teargas shells to disperse crowds protesting an attack on a Kashmiri leader by Hindu extremists, witnesses said.

The protest was led by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, which says its detained leader Yasin Malik was attacked during a hospital check-up by Shiv Sena activists on Wednesday.

Dozens of Malik’s supporters, led by acting JKLF chairman Javed Mir, poured onto the streets of Srinagar, chanting slogans against Shiv Sena and the Indian authorities.

Police baton-charged the crowd and detained seven people, including Mir and human rights activist Ahsan Untoo.—AFP
