HYDERABAD, May 9: The Sindh Water Committee (SWC) has expressed concern over the role of federal and Punjab governments, as well as of Wapda’s, on whose behest the Irsa has accorded certification to the “illegal, unconstitutional and immoral” greater Thal Canal project.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, a spokesman for the Committee, Abrar Kazi said that the greater Thal canal project is a “fraud” against the people of Sindh.
He said that the Thal canal was never a part of the 1991 Water Accord as claimed by the officials, and added that its purported inclusion in the documents annexed to the accord were the result of fraudulent means.
“The Sindh Water Committee is prepared to fight the case of the province at all the forums,” Kazi said.
He said that the Sindh Water Committee regrets the assent given by the representatives of Balochistan and NWFP to the certification of the greater Thal canal project, and considers it as a step against the interests of Pakistan.
He warned that the people of Sindh would never agree to further cuts on the share of water from River Indus, and are prepared to wage a struggle against it.
The Sindh Water Committee has called for an emergent meeting of its members on May 11, to discuss the issue.
SINDH NATIONAL COUNCIL: The Sindh National Council (SNC) has claimed that the construction of greater Thal canal was a violation of para-7 of the 1991 Water Accord.

He pointed out that during the last 65 years, floods were witnessed only on 10 occasions which could not be made the basis for the construction of the Thal canal.
