KARACHI, May 9: An anti-terrorism court sentenced on Thursday a bandit to death for killing a man and his minor son.
Judge Aley Maqbool Rizvi of the ATC-1 also ordered the forfeiture of the entire movable and immovable property of Liaquat Ali, who was injured and arrested in a shootout with police in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Oct 6 last year.
Liaquat, with his accomplice, Noor Mohammed, hijacked the car of Mumtaz Ali, a lawyer, in Clifton and held him and his son Danial hostage at gunpoint.
A police patrol in Gulshan-i-Iqbal intercepted the bandits, who opened fire at police. In the exchange of fire, the two hostages and one of the captors were killed and Liaquat was arrested in injured condition.
The prosecution, represented by Abdul Waheed Khan, examined a total of 10 prosecution witnesses.
The PWs also included two eyewitnesses - Ramzan Ali and Mohammed Akram - who had their chicken shop close to the place of shooting.
NBWS AGAINST EX-SHO: An additional district and sessions judge, Central, Ghulam Qadir Leghari, issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of a former station house officer of Azizabad police station.
The judge ordered the arrest of inspector Chaudhry Rafique for his constant failure to appear in the court despite several notices.
The police official was required by the court for his evidence in an attempt to murder case against accused Mohammed Hanif.
The judge also ordered the police authorities to deduct Rs5,000 from the salary of the inspector and produce him in the court on May 22.
RAPIST CONVICTED: An additional district and sessions judge, Central, sentenced a man to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for raping the 12-year-old daughter of his nextdoor neighbour.
According to the prosecution, Shaukat Ali called the daughter of his neighbour on March 20, 1997 in his house on the pretext that his wife was pregnant and needed help. The accused tricked the girl into drinking a syrup, laced with intoxicant, and raped her.
ACQUITTED: An additional district and sessions judge, South, Farooq Ali Channa, acquitted two workers of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement in the murder case of three workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
Jameel Ahmed alias Jameel Kalia and Naseeruddin were prosecuted for killing Zafar, Ismail and Naseem in an attack on the sector office of the Muttahida in Garden on June 24, 1996.
The judge acquitted the two activists of all charges as the prosecution could not establish its case against them.
FORMER ETO CONVICTED: An accountability court sentenced a former excise and taxation officer and a manager of a wine shop to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment in a corruption reference.
Judge Riaz Ahmed Phulpotu of the AC-2 also fined Agha Wazir Abbas, former ETO, and Abdul Hameed of Standard Wine Shop, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Rs2.5 million each. They would have to undergo an additional three years’ simple imprisonment if they failed to pay the fine.
According to the prosecution, the accused caused loss to the national exchequer through a fake import permit of liquor.
