Criville quits

JEREZ (Spain), May 4: Alex Criville, the only Spaniard ever to win a 500cc world championship, announced his retirement from the sport Saturday.

The 1999 world champion told reporters at a news conference in Jerez on the second day of official qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix that he would not ride again for health reasons.

The 32-year-old, who announced in February that he was taking a break from the sport because of fainting fits that he has suffered since 1999, said he has now made a decision to retire permanently from the sport.—Reuters
