TOBA TEK SINGH, May 3: Differences between district Nazim Chaudhry Muhammad Ashfaq and Gojra tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Khalid Javed Warraich aggravated on Friday over the issue of naming a road in Gojra tehsil.

The Gojra tehsil council meeting earlier unanimously approved the proposal to name the Gojra-Mochiwala road after the late Mehdi Shah of Chak 353 JB, Mehdi Abad.

The group supported by the district Nazim had earlier moved a resolution in the district council meeting proposing to name the said road after the late Chaudhry Fazle Karim, father of Intelligence Bureau director Chaudhry Babar Sikandar Warraich. The movers and supporters had claimed in their speeches that Chaudhry Karim was a Pakistan Movement worker and had rendered great services for the area.

The opposition members, however, said he had been a leader of the Unionist Party, had no role in Pakistan Movement and criminal cases had been registered against him at that time. Called to vote by show of hands the resolution was carried in the district council meeting.

The district Nazim later got installed road signs bearing the new name. Tehsil Nazim reportedly sent his men to remove the board. The district Nazim then ordered the executive engineer (Highways) to re-install the board. The XEN obliged. The board was, however, removed again under pressure from the tehsil Nazim who pointed out that the district council had no say in the matter. Under the rules, he said, the tehsil municipal administration alone was authorized to name streets and roads.

The the passage of tehsil council resolution naming the road after Mehdi Shah has forced the district officials to seek guidance for the Local Government Department.

PMP: The Pakistan Millat Party’s (PMP) national executive committee will meet in Islamabad on Saturday (today) to discuss the post-referendum political situation in the country.

This was stated by PMP’s NEC member Ghiasuddin Janbaz while talking to newsmen here on Friday. He said party chief Sardar Farooq Leghari would preside over the meeting.

The party would also review the objections regarding the delimitation of national and provincial constituencies in accordance with the coming October elections, he added.

QUL: Scores of political leaders, activists and citizens on Friday attended the qul ceremony of late former MPA Javed Ahmad Kharal at Kamalia.

He had died on Thursday. He was the younger brother of former federal information minister and PPP secretary-general Khalid Ahmad Kharal.
