By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 29: About 90,000 candidates are likely to appear in the first phase of the Intermediate annual examinations-2002 from May 3.

According to the Board of Intermediate Education, 128 examination centres, including 56 for females, have been planned at different government and private colleges and higher secondary schools in the city. The examinations will be held in two shifts, ie., from 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm.

The Board has registered 21,645 candidates, including 16,633 females, in the pre-medical group, while another 42,247 candidates, including 11,746 females, have been registered for pre-engineering group examinations. About 25,625, 7663 females, have been registered for commerce (regular) group and 933 candidates for home economics examinations.

In all, 60 examinations centres, 21 that for female candidates, will be operational in the evening shift (from 3pm to 6pm), while 68 centres, including 35 for females, will be working for the morning shift (10am to 1pm).

The examinations of the pre-medical, commerce and home economics groups will be held in the morning shift, while there will be only one examination in the evening shift for the pre-engineering group candidates.

This is for the first time that the examinations of two major groups in the science section, ie., pre-engineering and pre-medical groups, will be held separately. A Board official said that holding of examinations of the science group separately had helped the Board in reducing the number of examination centres.

The first papers for pre-engineering group candidates will be held on May 3, while in the case of pre-medical group the first paper is on May 7. The commerce group examinations will begin on May 7, while home economics groups examinations will start from May 3.

The first papers of each group, with date of examinations, as fixed by the Board are as follows:

Geology-I (pre-engineering group, part I) on May 3; chemistry paper-II and statistics paper-II (pre-engineering, part-II) on May 8; chemistry paper-I (pre-medical, part-I) on May 7; zoology paper-II (pre-medical -part-II) on May 8; principles of economics paper-I (commerce, part-I) on May 7; principles of commerce paper II (commerce-II) on May 8; food and nutrition (home economics, part-I) on May 7; and physics (home economics part-II) on May 3.

As per the BIE schedule, the last paper of pre-medical group (part-I) will be held on May 21, while pre-medical (part-II) last paper, will be held on May 22. Pre-engineering part-I and II examinations will conclude on May 7 and May 28 respectively.

The last papers of commerce part-I and II will be held on May 21 and May 27 respectively, while last papers of home economics part-I and will be held on May 21 and May 22.

In the second phase of the examinations, the papers of arts (regular and private) and commerce group (private) will be held once the first phase examinations were concluded. A Board official hoped that second phase examinations will start from June 3 or 4.
