Storms kill 12 in BD

DHAKA, April 28: At least 12 people were killed and more than 200 injured when storms swept parts of Bangladesh late on Friday and early on Saturday, officials said.

Winds of up to 60 km per hour flattened hundreds of thatched homes and disrupted power supply and telecommunications in at least four districts around the capital, Dhaka, they said.

Newspapers on Sunday said rice and other crops were also damaged but could not give any immediate estimate of losses.

The casualties were caused by house collapses and flying debris, officials in the affected areas told reporters.

Another nine people were killed and nearly 200 injured last week when storms lashed several northern districts.—Reuters
