SHEFFIELD (England), April 28: Peter Ebdon secured a place in the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Championship with a 13-7 win over Joe Perry at The Crucible Saturday.

Ebdon felt the match was marred by a series of ‘kicks’ and the condition of the table.

“It was quite unusual that the bounces were inconsistent. There were numerous big bounces off the black cushion in particular,” he said afterwards.

“These cloths are not designed to last very long, even over a matter of days they wear very quickly. It’s something you’ve got to get used to.”

Scotland’s Stephen Hendry holds a 6-2 lead over Anthony Davies in their second round tie which will resume on Sunday.

Hendry, who has won the title a record seven times, compiled a 126 break in the second frame and knocked in three half-centuries.

Former champion Ken Doherty believes his form will have to improve significantly if he is to win the tournament.

The Irishman, who won the title in 1997, ground out a tense 13-12 win over Mark King.

“I know I have to improve an awful lot if I have any aspirations about winning here but I’m there with a chance. I think it is there but I just have to keep bringing it out and do it more consistently,” he said.

King drew some comfort from his performance, despite the narrow defeat.

“I can take a lot of positives for next year,” he said. “I know now that I can fight with the best players and maybe next time I’ll win the last frame.”

Mark Williams, who won snooker’s top prize two years ago. trails Anthony Hamilton 5-3 in their second round tie.
