SIALKOT, April 27: The Sialkot-based permanent UN observers will monitor the presidential referendum here on April 30.
Official sources told Dawn that the observers would be accompanied by senior officials from local government and newsmen. They would visit various polling stations to monitor the transparency of the referendum, they added.
WHEAT PROCUREMENT: The Punjab food department reopened three procurement centres out of six in view of a bumper crop in the district. The centres are located in Sialkot, Daska and Pasrur tehsil.
GOVT CRITICIZED: The government has miserably failed to implement wheat procurement policy as growers have been forced to sell their produce at Rs240 to Rs 260 per 40 kilograms instead of the support price.
Talking to newsmen here on Saturday, Punjab Farmers Rights Commission chairman Mirza Ehsan Baig and Kissan Board’s Sialkot president Syed Iqbal Shah expressed grave concern over the poor performance of the food department authorities.
They urged the president and the Punjab governor to take immediate notice of this critical situation.
