Anti-referendum meetings held

By Our Correspondent

BADIN, April 27: The president of the PPP, district Badin, Dr Sikandar Ali Mandhro, claimed that at least 75 per cent of voters in Badin District would not go to cast their votes in the referendum.

Rejecting the impression of President Musharraf’s popularity among the masses, he said it was timely, and added that if he was more popular among the people than the political parties, he would not hold the referendum.

Speaking at corner meetings at various towns, union councils and villages of Badin District in connection with the anti-referendum movement launched since April 24, he said it was a matter of surprise that how the president hoped for overall victory when the main political parties of the country, religious leaders, workers, nationalists, and NGOs were boycotting the referendum.

Mr Mandhro was accompanied by the district secretary general of the PPP, Abdul Ghafoor Nizamani, and Haji Ramzan Chandio among others.

They started their campaign from Golarchi tehsil and held meetings in the union councils of Tarai, Ahmed Rajo, Khorwah, Kario Ghanwar on Wednesday.

They held meetings in Matli, Tando Ghulam Ali, Dumbalo, Talhar Tando Bago, Pangrio, Khadhro, Pahar Mari, and other places on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Nazims and councillors of the Awam Dost Panel of each union council had reportedly welcomed the PPP leaders.
