KARACHI, April 25: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro on Thursday inaugurated an electrification scheme for Khawaja Ajmer Nagri in North Karachi.
“It is a good sign that the KESC is paying attention to poor areas as well,” he said.
Under the scheme, the KESC is giving connection to customers at 50 per cent discount to discourage kunda system.
He hoped that people of other areas would also take advantage of the scheme.
He appreciated the efforts of the KESC in elimination of the kunda regime. Despite having powers, the army led administration of the Corporation has taken right decision to deal with the kunda users in a peaceful manner.
He said the government was trying to enhance the standard of living in the province and maximum available resources were being allocated for the purpose. He said the government was also taking measures to develop other means of power generation including coal in order to provide cheaper means of electricity to consumers.
He said the government was aware that electricity was a prerequisite for the development of urban and rural areas and was giving priority to the provision of connections to the masses in the province.
“The government is providing maximum resources for uplift projects and allocated 25 per cent resources for development purpose from earlier 4 per cent”, he said.
He asked area residents to pressure those involved in power theft to use legal means for getting power. “If power theft is minimized ultimate benefit would be passed on to every consumer after eradicating menace of Kunda system”, he stated.
He said under Khushhal Pakistan program development projects were being undertaken at grass roots level by elected representatives.
Mr Soomro asked the people to get enrolled their children in schools in large numbers as getting education was the need of the hour.
Responding to the plea of Town Nazim, North Karachi Town, Shafiqur Rehman Usmani, the governor assured that the government would provide alternative place to people affected due to construction of road.
He urged the people to fully participate in referendum and support General Pervez Musharraf. He also asked them to attend the public meeting to be addressed by President Pervez Musharraf in Karachi on April 28.
The managing director of the KESC, Brig Tariq Saddozai, on the occasion gave a briefing on the obstacles to remove kundas.
The Governor announced that special funds would also be given from the Poverty Alleviation Programme to the Corporation to supply electricity to people all over the province.
He suggested that the local representatives of people should also come forward and make successful people welfare schemes.
The Governor advised the KESC engineers and officers to improve their customer services.
He said the government under the leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf wanted to serve the masses at their door steps.
“We have initiated a reform process that should be completed in the larger interest of the people of this country,” he said.
The KESC MD said that 546 connections were being provided in Khawaja Ajmer Nagri while so far 12,000 connections had been given with an investment of Rs33 million.
