President says he will accept verdict

By Our Correspondent

SARGODHA, April 22: President Pervez Musharraf has said that billions of rupees will be spent on the development of agriculture and promotion of agro-based industry to improve the standard of living of farmers.

Speaking at a gathering of councillors and Nazimeen of various union councils of four districts, including Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Bhakkar at the local circuit house here on Monday, the president said it was the mission of his government to bring about green revolution in the country.

Gen Musharraf claimed that an era of progress had started and every one would get justice and all facilities of life, adding, however, that all of us should work hard and with dedication.

He asked the people that he needed their support and strength to continue the reforms initiated for their welfare. A strategy had been evolved to achieve the desired results in this regard, he added.

Gen Musharraf said that needy people would be extended financial help up to Rs50,000 from Zakat fund. He also announced setting up of a university in Sargodha and a technical college. He also announced construction of an interchange at Sargodha-Jhang Road and assured funds for replacement of sewerage and water supply lines which would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs130 million.

Earlier, the security staff did not allow Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Ghulam Sarwar Qadri to enter the meeting room as the minister did not have the security card.

The meeting was also addressed by the Punjab governor and Zila Nazimeen of Sargodha, Khushab, Bhakkar and Khushab, who assured all support to Gen Pervez Musharraf in the forthcoming referendum.

LAWYERS TEAM: Talking to a delegation of lawyers here, the president said the exiled leaders were busy in creating destabilisation in the country which was leading the country towards a chaos-like situation.

Gen Musharraf said he would not allow such elements to sabotage the reforms process introduced by the present regime for the welfare of the people.

He said his government had taken a number of steps for the betterment of people but some elements had given an impression that in general election they would succeed in getting rid of the present regime and restore the previous system.

Gen Musharraf said he would not discuss the constitutionality of the referendum as this matter is sub judice before the Supreme Court and made it clear that he would accept the verdict of the court in this regard.

Due to tight schedule the president’s meetings with women, students, traders and journalists were postponed.
