MULTAN, April 22: Torture marks on the body of a prisoner who died in the district jail on Sunday had made dubious the claim by the jail authorities that he committed suicide, said a source in the Nishtar Hospital forensic department.

Haider Ali, 24, who was shifted to the district jail on Friday was found dead in the cell on Sunday. The jail authorities claimed that he committed suicide by hanging himself.

However, the medical board which was constituted to perform autopsy on the body had not yet made public its findings.

The source told this correspondent that there were two torture marks on his shoulders and two on his knees. There were rope marks on the lower part of his neck indicating that he did not strangle himself. Had he committed suicide, marks would have been on the upper side of the neck, he said.
