Sri Lanka open 10-stroke lead on opening day
RAWALPINDI, April 18: Sri Lanka with a gross score of 143 led the international team match as the 41st Al-Falah Bank National Amateur Championship opened at the Rawalpindi Golf Course Thursday.
A fine performance by R.A. Anura Rohana with a score of 70 and B.G. Lalith Kumara (73) helped the Sri Lankans take lead on a fairly hot day.
The Pakistan B team comprising Dr. Aimal Zaman (gross 78) and Tariq Mahmood (75) were 10 strokes behind the leaders while Bangladesh were also in second place after Milon Ahammed carded 74 and his team-mate had a score of 79.
The teams from the federal capital and the Punjab Golf Association were the joint leaders in the Inter-Association Team Match. Following them was the Frontier side comprising Zeeshan Ali (77), Ibrahim Asad (79), Kamal Ibrahim (83) and Lt. Col Saud Khan (84).
Leading the federal team, Taimur Hasan carded 74 while Gulraiz Shahid had 77, Babar Khokhar (84) and AVM (Retd) Abbas H. Mirza (85). Adil Jehangir and Sameer Iftikhar of the Punjab side had scores of 76 each followed by Lt. Col Asif Mehdi and M. Safdar, both on 83.
The individual event was dominated by Sri Lankan R.A. Anura Rohana with a gross score of two under par 70 as he birdied four times on the front nine and once when coming back. He bogeyed holes No. 2, 5 and 17.
Following Anura was Nadeem Abbas (handicap 3) with 71 gross who had birdies on the ninth, 14th and 16th holes. Close on his heels were Taimur Hasan and Bangladesh’s Milon Ahammed at 74.
The net category saw Nadeem Abbas (handicap 3) firing in four under par 68 to lead the field while two strokes behind was Anura (handicap 0) with 70. Adil Jehangir (handicap 4) and Gulrez Shahid (handicap 5) were further behind at 72.
In the ladies gross competition, Ms Mehvish Javed was ahead with a score of 82 with Mrs. Tahira Nazir a stroke behind and Miss Jamila Jabbar in third place.
Miss Rubab Haider was in front in the net competition carding 69 while Ms Mehvish was second (72) and Dr. Farida Naseer standing third at 74.
