KARACHI: Water crisis in many areas

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 13: The overall water supply situation in the city, which was already highly unsatisfactory since the onset of summer, has deteriorated further due to the ongoing unannounced loadshedding.

In many localities long-duration power failures have been occurring when they are to get water supply.

Residents of different localities complained that, on the one hand, they had been receiving scant supply for the past couple of weeks and, on the other, power failures, occurring for the past few days, had resulted in further cuts in their supply in the hot weather.

“For the past three consecutive days we have been getting a meagre supply of water entirely because power failure of long duration often occurs when we are scheduled to get water supply,” they said.

Most of such complaints have been received from North Nazimabad’s blocks I and J, Federal B-Area’s blocks 4, 5, 6, 14, 17, 18 and 19, PECHS Block 2, Kharadar, Lyari, Old Golimar, Nazimabad and different sectors of North Karachi.

Residents of a number of societies, including Shabbirabad, Al-Hamra Society, Bangalore Town, Adamjee Nagar, Mohammed Ali Society and Dhoraji, said water supply to their localities had been restored only on Thursday, but frequent power failures occurring for the past couple of days had added to the water shortage problem, as water to their localities were supplied late at night.

“For almost the entire past week the KWSB did not supply us water, so we had to buy private tankers. Once again we are being forced to buy expensive tankers, mainly because of interruptions in power supply,” said an elderly resident of Mohammed Ali Housing Society.

Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from Clifton’s Block 2, Sector 11 1/2 of Orangi and Malir, Khokhrapar.
