HYDERABAD, April 12: An Independent Citizen Alliance Referendum Committee has been formed which will work for the success of the presidential referendum scheduled to be held on April 30.
The committee will also work for the success of public meeting which will be addressed by President General Pervez Musharraf at the Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad, on April 26.
The constitution of the committee was announced on Thursday by its office bearers.
They said that some political and religious parties were opposing the referendum with out any reason.
They argued that when a few hundred members of the provincial and national assemblies and senate could elect the president, there was no reason why 140 million people of the country could not elect him.
They claimed that those political and religious parties, in whose opinion the referendum announced by General Pervez Musharraf is unconstitutional, had supported the Ziaul Haq’s referendum.
They said that if article 62 and 63 of the constitution was implemented, many members of the parliament would be disqualified.
They said that constitutional experts like Sharifuddin Pirzada and Iftikhar Gilani had said that the holding of referendum was not unconstitutional.
They pointed out that the steps taken by General Pervez Musharraf during the last 30 months had no parallel in the history of Pakistan.
They said that the president also took a revolutionary by allocating 33 per cent seats for the women.
Those who addressed press conference included Irshad Khan Kaimkhani, Apa Badarunnisa, Ashiq Ali and Saleem Rajput.
