SIALKOT, April 10: The Punjab Food Department has set up 11 wheat procurement centres in Sialkot and Narowal districts.
Talking to newsmen at Daska on Wednesday, district food controller Mian Ejaz Ahmad said the direct purchase of wheat from growers would help curb the menace of middlemen and dealers.
He said on the orders of the Sialkot district Nazim, special committees comprising political activists, landlords and revenue department’s employees had been constituted for the smooth selling of gunny bags to growers.
The government, he said, had decided to contact owners of the private storages to store the expected bumper wheat yield as the official godowns in Sialkot and Narowal districts had the capacity of only 700,000 wheat bags.
All necessary arrangements had been completed for starting wheat procurement at these centres from April 15, he said.
Daska assistant food controller Syed Sayiaf Abbas was also present on the occasion.
