KARACHI: Altaf seeks provincial autonomy

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 10: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has called for giving authority to the people of Sindh to run the affairs of the province.

Speaking over telephone from London to a gathering of Sindhi and Baloch people and members of the Christian community, who visited the Muttahida offices at Nine Zero, Azizabad, the other day, he mentioned that if he was vested with the authority he could raise a regiment, comprising permanent residents of Sindh within a period of six months. He said it was just a propaganda that Urdu and Sindhi- speaking people were reluctant to join the armed forces.

The muttahida chief said he wanted to tell all those who objected to his raising slogans in favour of the province that Sindh was the only province of today’s Pakistan which under the leadership of G. M. Syed had unanimously voted in favour of Pakistan and as such he loved Sindh and raised slogans for the province. “Those who love Pakistan will definitely raise slogans of Sindh, which ultimately meant slogan for Pakistan,” he added.

He observed that the whole country was being run on the revenue of Sindh, but it was the irony that the province was even being deprived of water and its youths were being screened out of their jobs and outsiders were being brought in and given jobs. “Sindh province generates 70 per cent of the total federal revenue, without which the daily administrative affairs of the country could not even be managed for four days,” he maintained.

He said Sindh was his motherland and he along with the people of Sindh would continue to struggle for its dignity and prosperity. He said no one should be allowed to create differences among the various sections of Sindh and all sorts of injustices to the province should be stopped.

Addressing the office-bearers of Sindh organizing committee of his party, Altaf Hussain said the struggle for power and undertaking a mission for any collective cause were two different things.

While making efforts to win power through politics, you talk of “taking”, but in the case of a mission you have to “give” instead of hunting for your personal benefits, he said.

He urged them to work selflessly and remain steadfast.

He said the workers should suppress their ego and make efforts for the improvement of their traits.

KILLING SLAMMED: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Wednesday condemned killing of its worker by terrorists and criticized the police and the law enforcement agencies for failing to safeguard people’s lives and properties, adds PPI.

Addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club, deputy convener Nasreen Jalil, and other members of the coordination committee said the crime had been carried out amid tight security and in the presence of personnel of the law enforcement agencies.

She said Hyderi is one of the busiest markets where police were usually deployed to ward off any untoward incident.

The murder of Asfahan Haider, she said, created questions that who was responsible for the murder.

She recalled another incident in the same area in which another MQM activist was fired upon under the same circumstances.

The Muttahida leader urged President Pervez Musharraf for the early arrest of the murderers of its worker.
