Hantuchova and Pierce advance

AMELIA ISLAND (Florida), April 9: Ninth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova comfortably advanced to the second round of the $585,000 Bausch & Lomb Championships with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Australia’s Evie Dominikovic Monday.

Two-time Grand Slam winner, and 1998 Amelia Island champion Mary Pierce of France also advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Germany’s Vanessa Henke.

In other first round matches, 11th-seeded South African Amanda Coetzer, who committed 25 unforced errors and only had 11 winners, was thrashed 6-2, 6-1 by Croatia’s Iva Majoli in under an hour, while 10th-seed Elena Dementieva beat America’s Lilia Osterloh 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
