LAHORE, April 9: An accountability court on Tuesday convicted an accountant of the Bahawalpur District Health Office of fraud.

Convict Malik Fida Husain was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs20 million. The court ordered confiscation of 143 kanals of land, a one-kanal house in Bahawalpur Model Town and the Progressive Medicine Company of the convict.

The court also disqualified the accountant from getting any loan from any government controlled bank or financial institution for 10 years.

Malik Fida illegally acquired properties and cash assets disproportionate to his income in his own name and in the names of his dependents. He had deposits of Rs6.8 million in his name at the Lodhran and Bahawalpur branches of National Savings Centres. He also had special savings certificates worth Rs3 million in his own name and another Rs3.1 million in the names of his sons besides 143 kanals of urban and agricultural land, a one kanal house, a medicine company and three cars registered in his own name, his wife and sons.
