KARACHI, April 9: 5,445 commuters lost their lives in 10481 accidents in the year 2001 in the country, mainly due to reckless driving.
A data compiled by the Federal Bureau of Statistics reveals that during the previous year the daily average casualties were around fifteen. Out of total reported 10481 accidents 4468 were serious and fatal.
The data shows that the number of vehicles involved in road mishaps stood at 11,210. In November 2001 the number of accidents was recorded as the highest at 990 across the country in which 496 people died. Highest injures were registered in December at around 1308.
The Provincial breakdown of the accidents indicates that the Punjab recorded 5441 number of accidents, out of which 2628 were fatal and 2813 non-fatal. Some 3271 people lost their lives and around 7213 got injured in 2001 in which 5357 vehicles were involved.
The NWFP with second highest number of accidents recorded at 2489 lost about 727 lives and 3004 persons were hospitalized. The number of vehicles involved in 632 fatal and 1857 non-fatal accidents stood at 2723.
Sindh during the previous year registered 2183 accidents compared with 2239 in the year 2000, in which 1340 persons lost their lives and 2467 sustained serious injuries. The number of vehicles involved in 1105 fatal and 1070 non-fatal accidents was 2706.
In Balochistan only 368 traffic accidents took place, out of which 103 were fatal and 265 non-fatal. The number of causalities registered in the province was only 107. The number of the injured 351.—PPI
